Thanks for your response. I think your first solution is probably the answer. There is no evidence of oil leaking from any other location. If it were a blown gasket, I would have oil located at lower points on the engine....at least oil on the carb itself. The only indication of an oil leak was on the the top of the battery case and from the air box where it connects to the carb. There was residue inside the airbox but none on the filter...at least none that I could see. There was no power loss on the return trip....smooth idle at a stand still. I think I'll take your suggestion..thanks again.
